Behind the development of the new vineyards at Ohau is a team who have made a commitment to quality at every level of the business. From our very first plantings, through to the winemaking and marketing of our new wines, we have focused on the very best quality practices. The vines have been hand tended throughout the season, not just at harvest.
Leaf removal, canopy management, fruit thinning and quality control of the fruit – all have been done by hand, and this we think plays a critical part in the high quality of the first vintage of wines we have produced. Being involved in the vineyard is exciting because it has given everyone a greater understanding of how the vines perform in this terroir. With no other plantings available to benchmark against, Ohau Gravels is a pioneering vineyard in the district. For our first vintage we had an excellent growing season and the fruit had extended ripening period during a late autumn. Grapes were hand harvested during April and May 2009 and immediately transported to the Matahiwi Estate winery in Wairarapa where Jane Cooper made the wines. We are thrilled with our inaugural vintage release wines - Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris.
