INTRODUCING NEW ZEALAND’S NEWEST WINE REGION
Ohau Gravels Vineyards has established itself in New Zealand’s newest wine growing region at Ohau, just north of the Kapiti Coast in the lower North Island. The area was discovered by local viticulturist Kate Gibbs who identified that the river terrace soils were similar to some of the better sites in Marlborough and that the area has a unique microclimate similar to the Nelson region. The area has recorded minimal frost over the years, as well as low rainfall during the critical autumn ripening period. The region is well known as an agricultural hot spot prized for its market-garden produce. For centuries the area has been shaped by the Ohau River, which has laid down deposits of gravel, resulting in a stony yet fertile soil. Sunshine reflects off the stones onto the vines, just the thing for producing high quality grapes and top quality wines.
The wines are made by Jane Cooper who has established a reputation for herself as one of the leading female winemakers in New Zealand. Property developers MC2 Limited is behind the vineyard development, which was formerly known as Bishops Vineyard, but renamed to reflect the region and terroir. The vineyard supports sustainable winegrowing and is currently seeking accreditation. “We are proud to be behind the Ohau Gravels wines, and after such a successful first vintage we look forward to what’s to come from New Zealand’s newest grape growing region,” says Ohau Gravels Vineyards spokesman Dave Munro of MC2 Limited. With a commitment to quality at every level of the business, from planting through to winemaking to marketing, Ohau Gravels’ future plans include selling the wine on the local New Zealand market, as well as developing new export markets with a focus on Australia, Europe and Asia. Already Ohau Gravels has gone from strength to strength, winning a trophy and gold medal at the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards 2009 for its first vintage - Ohau Gravels Pinot Gris 2009.
