FIRST VINTAGE TROPHY WIN FOR OHAU GRAVELS And New Zealand’s Newest Grape Growing Region
Ohau Gravels Vineyards, north of the Kapiti Coast, has just won a trophy and gold medal at the Romeo Bragato Wine Awards 2009 for it’s first vintage – Ohau Gravels Pinot Gris 2009. Dave Munro, executive director, MC 2 Group Limited who is responsible for pioneering this new vineyard development, is thrilled with the achievement. “We are preparing to launch at the end of September so this accolade has come at a time when a morale booster is appreciated and all those involved are reminded that we are on the right path to success. Ohau Gravels will be no one trophy wonder!”
The Ohau Gravels region has been shaped by the Ohau River over many centuries. Although gravely and free-draining, the soil is also fertile and ideal for vineyards, helped along by the stored heat in the rocky soil. Kate Gibbs of Stanmore Farm at Te Horo, has drawn on over 20 years of expert viticulture knowledge to help drive the development of the land.
Kate identified that the river terrace soils were to some of the better sites in Marlborough and the area has a unique microclimate similar to the Nelson region. The area has recorded minimal frost over the years, as well as low rainfall during the critical autumn ripening period.
The wines from the new vineyard are being made by one of New Zealand’s best-known female winemakers, Jane Cooper. Website, press material and printed collateral will be available from September.
